Orchestral debut redux: Electric Fields and MSO reunite for NAIDOC week celebration

MSO Electric Fields

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and award-winning electronic music duo Electric Fields are set to team up again for a special encore performance as part of NAIDOC week.

The performance, taking place at Hamer Hall, will showcase Electric Fields’ original compositions and traditional inma songs, with their music arranged for orchestra by Alex Turley, the MSO 2022 Cybec Young Composer in Residence. This rich showcase of Australia’s Indigenous cultures takes place during NAIDOC week, on July 8.

The duo, made up of Zaachariaha Fielding on lead vocals and Michael Ross on production, made their orchestral debut with the MSO in 2022, bringing with them a night of emotionally moving and breathtaking music that combines pop, soul and electronica with intimate storytelling.

Zaachariaha often incorporates the traditional languages of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara people into his extraordinary vocals, creating a performance unlike any other.

Electric Fields have already had a standout year, performing their song We the People – the official theme song of the 2023 Sydney World Pride – to a crowd of 20,000 people at the Opening Concert in Sydney’s Domain. They have also played at major events across Australia and internationally, including Splendour in The Grass, Golden Plains, VIVID, Groovin the Moo, and the Spotify Front Left showcase.

“We are so honoured to perform again with the MSO, sharing our music with the deep textures of the orchestra,” said Michael Ross.

“The performance will include our pop compositions, along with traditional songs drawing through the root systems of Zaachariaha’s community, creating a sonic landscape from the desert sands.”

This upcoming collaboration is expected to be a unique and unforgettable experience, as Electric Fields and the MSO combine to create a stunning sonic landscape.
