One of Australia’s most storied bands, The Bushwackers, are playing Mantra Studio next month

Words by Staff Writer

Australiana legends The Bushwackers are coming to Mantra Studio on November 24 for a night of beloved classics, traditional folk and working songs.

The Bushwackers story is nothing less than fascinating, as the wider Australian public discovered when they reluctantly agreed to take part on The Voice Australia this year.

Slightly older Beat readers may remember them from earlier TV appearances on The Midday show, The Mike Walsh Show, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Bert Newton, Hey Hey It’s Saturday and GTK on the ABC.

The duo – Dobe Newton and Roger Corbett – are seasoned veterans of the Australian festival circuit, delighting audiences with their crowd-pleasing sets featuring a unique mix of iconic tracks from Beneath The Southern Cross and When Britannia Ruled The Waves to the likes of Faces in The Street and The Ballad of 1891. As testament to their longevity, over 90 musicians have played with The Bushwackers over the years.

The Bushwackers know all about classics. Dobe Newton wrote I Am Australian with Bruce Woodley of The Seekers, a revelation that largely came to light through their involvement with The Voice. The pair progressed to the semi-finals before quitting the competition, saying they’d prefer the spotlight to go to emerging singer Ezra Williams instead.

The pair will only be performing one show (with limited seats available) on Friday November 24 with accomplished professional performers, including violinist, conductor, music educator and singer/songwriter Sarah Busutill and veteran of various rock, folk and Irish bands Silas Palmer.

And what better place to discover this hidden Aussie musical gem than at another hidden gem itself. Mantra, created by Dave Baird and Patsy Toop, thrives off its friendly hospitality – anyone who walks through the door, for whatever reason, is met with a cheerful and welcoming vibe. The high-ceilinged, light-filled space has a cosy quality and works just as well for performances as it does for private functions and parties.

Mantra’s kitchen opens at 5.30pm while the show commences at 8pm, with bookings essential.
