Useless Spaceman & The Engagement

Useless Spaceman is a Melbourne-based indie rock band, with traces of punk and psychedelia. The group formed in the late 2010s, performing at house parties on the northside and becoming regulars at venues like the Brunswick Hotel, Bar Open, and Cherry Bar. Known for their raucous, theatrical live shows and sprawling, half-psychotic lyrical narratives, Spaceman recorded their eponymous EP in a partially demolished rehearsal studio in Richmond, on a budget of $700. Following the 2019 single and video release “Brunswick West”, the band strapped in for the Victorian lockdowns and began producing their first LP, The Marlboro Man Rides Again. The album is a freaky, blissed-out joyride twisting and turning across genres, exploring themes of love, loss, paranoia, corporate spirituality, disorganised attachment, and the colonisation of our solar system.

Garnering heavy praise from some of Australia’s biggest media, The Engagement deliver indie music with a stadium sound drawing influence from the likes of Bleachers, Coldplay and Bastille. MTV calls their single Heaven So Close an “uplifting anthem”, Triple J state “they can clearly put together the hooks and glitz.” Fox FM described them as having “a cool 80s/retro sound” and Triple M called them “fantastic.” Their songs combine earnest storytelling and big hooky melodies to create their own brand of electro-pop that has gained over one million streams on Spotify. They’ve performed to audiences across Australia, including St.Kilda Festival and Oktoberfest. After recently selling out 4 shows at Melbourne’s iconic Luna Park, The Gasometer and Cherry Bar, the band continues to showcase new material at live shows with an upcoming EP on the way.
