Melbourne's west is getting more accessible journeys with the first G Class tram arriving at Maidstone Tram Depot.
Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams opened the new tram depot today, where the first of 100 new low-floor next generation G Class trams will undergo testing.
Backed by a $1.85 billion investment by the Victorian government, the new tram will go through rigorous tests at the purpose-built facility to assess braking systems, accessibility features and overall reliability before hitting the network later this year.
G Class trams will be rolled out on Routes 57, 59 and 82, gradually phasing out the older high-floor trams. These new trams offer more space and better accessibility for up to 150 passengers; almost double the capacity of what’s currently operating in Melbourne’s west.

Accessibility groups, passengers and tram drivers were all consulted during the design process to ensure the trams work for everyone who uses them.
Maidstone Tram Depot will maintain, clean and house the new G Class fleet. Built with sustainability in mind, it features rainwater collection and reuse, solar panels and recycled materials.
Local content requirements mean 65 per cent of each tram is made in Victoria. Built in Dandenong, the G Class trams will support almost 2000 local Victorian jobs throughout their construction.
