Critically-acclaimed US guitarist Steve Gunn is coming to Melbourne Recital Centre for an intimate solo show in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. The show will see Gunn on guitars and vocals, supported by Andrew Tuttle on banjo, acoustic guitar, banjitar, and electronics.
In addition to his distinguished solo career, which has seen the prolific Brooklynite release 21 solo albums since 2007, Gunn is also well-known as the guitarist for Kurt Vile’s band, The Violators. His 2014 solo record, Way Out Weather, was hailed as a landmark in melodic guitar. He’ll be supporting his latest album, last year’s Other You, which also received rave reviews from critics and featured a variety of dreamy, introspective instrumental collaborations.

Other You was recorded with veteran producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Cass McCombs, Vile). With influences ranging from blues, folk, ecstatic free jazz and psych in his continually unfolding output, Gunn has a rich tradition of collaboration. Other You features the likes of harpist Mary Lattimore, Juliana Barwick, Mary Lattimore, Bridget St. John, Jeff Parker, Bill MacKay, Ben Bertrand, drummer Ryan Sawyer (TV On The Radio, Thurston Moore, Gang Gang Dance), and others.
The Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is a suitably storied and atmospheric venue for Gunn’s work, who has a love of what he calls “sombre venues” – places with strong artistic history – having previously played at the NGV the last time he was in Melbourne. “Being in a museum where there’s such a rich collection of artwork, history, stories, it’s very inspiring to me,” Gunn told us. “Here in New York City, I try to go to art museums wherever I am.
“It’s not just the visual aspect but most paintings have a very important historical story and impact. Those kinds of stories – that kind of imagery – is always a source of inspiration for me, whether it’s abstract or otherwise.
“I took a lot of inspiration from the minimalist artists that were gaining momentum in the early ‘60s – a lot of them were from New York and were taking inspiration from the meditative process, simple form and repetition. I got really into a lot of these artists’ approaches and work ethics. It directly inspired me and my music. Just purely as a sense of craft and how you approach something, how you rework simple ideas and patterns, that is an element that I try to keep in my music as well.”
