The west of Melbourne is getting a huge new train station in 2028 as part of Spotswood's major infrastructure upgrade.

A new Melbourne train station will open to passengers in Spotswood in 2028, as part of level crossing removal works underway across Melbourne.

The Victorian government has announced community consultation is now open on plans to remove the Hudsons Road level crossing in Spotswood by building a new rail bridge. Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams said the project would improve safety and ease traffic congestion.

The new Spotswood Station will feature modern facilities including improved lighting, CCTV, lifts and stairs. Officials say this will make the station safer, more accessible and easier to use for commuters.

Expert assessments have determined that a rail bridge is the optimal solution for the area. This approach avoids the need for land acquisition and relocation of underground services, allowing the new Melbourne train station to be delivered faster while minimising disruption for local residents.

Elevating the rail line and station will create opportunities for new open spaces, improved walking and cycling connections, and additional trees and greenery along the corridor.

Currently, the Hudsons Road level crossing creates significant delays, with boom gates down for more than 50 minutes during morning peak as up to 50 trains pass through. The removal is expected to improve safety and reduce congestion for thousands of motorists.

Local roads will become safer once the West Gate Tunnel opens, with a 24-hour truck ban to be introduced on Hudsons Road between Melbourne Road and Booker Street.

The Werribee Line will be level crossing free by 2030. Works are already underway to remove level crossings at Champion and Maddox roads in Newport, and Maidstone Street in Altona.

The government is removing 110 level crossings across Melbourne by 2030, with 87 already completed.
