Now, it’s getting a much-needed makeover. “A jewel of St Kilda, Theatre Works has presented quality independent theatre for over four decades, supporting thousands of artists careers, and this project will set it up for the future,” says Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks.

The project aims to honour the heritage of the 1914 Parish Hall theatre space while modernizing and enhancing its facilities. Key improvements include the replacement and repair of the slate tile roof, the installation of new lighting, sound equipment and stage rigging technology, and the addition of a brand-new dressing room, rehearsal space and workshop.

These upgrades will not only elevate the audience experience but also provide much-needed support for creative projects and artists.

Accessibility is also a focal point of the redevelopment, with ground-level enhancements to improve wheelchair access to the theatre and stage, as well as the installation of new accessible doors at all site entrances. Additionally, landscaping and the creation of a new accessible car park will enhance the outdoor spaces surrounding the venue.

The Allan Labor Government has pledged $1.1 million towards the redevelopment, underscoring its commitment to supporting the arts and cultural sector.

Despite the construction, the 2024 Theatre Works season will proceed as planned, with completion of the redevelopment expected in early 2025. This milestone marks an exciting new chapter for Theatre Works, ensuring its legacy as a hub for creativity and innovation for years to come.
