The MP Music Industry Summit will ‘strengthen bonds’ in the region’s thriving scene next week

Words by Oliver Winn

Mornington Peninsula’s thriving live music scene will be bolstered by the Mornington Peninsula Music Industry (MPMI) Summit.

Mornington musicians rejoice! As part of the Mornington Peninsula Music Plan 2025, the Mornington Peninsula Music Industry brand initiative has one goal: “Make Music Matter.”

Expect a one-day event promising invaluable industry connections, songwriting workshops and of course, some quality live music. With some esteemed guests such as Katie Noonan, Jane Gazzo, Clint Hyndman and more, there’ll be a range of expertise to draw from.

Music journalist and broadcaster Jane Gazzo says relationships are the currency of the music industry: “A lot of the time, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know, and the idea of this year’s Summit is to really foster support and strengthen bonds for both musicians and venues while offering invaluable advice and ideas to everyone, whether you’re an emerging artist or an established muso.”

Mornington Peninsula Music Industry Summit

  • A day of collaboration, conversation and connection
  • 8am – 7pm, August 12
  • Mornington venues (located within five minutes walk of each other)
  • Gods Kitchen, Bar 55, The Grand, The Bay Hotel & The Dubliner

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Branding, Themes and Innovation panel

  • Monday 12 Aug
  • 9:15 am and 1:15 pm
  • The Grand Hotel

This panel focuses on possibly one of the most difficult-to-master aspects of being a musician – establishing your identity in the industry. Katie Noonan’s long list of accolades (including five ARIA awards) should give enough reason to attend this panel itself. If you’re not sold yet, Oztix head of music Brad Hinds will also be handing out his valuable expertise as one of Australia’s most important music industry figures.

Releasing Music & Event Producing panel

  • Monday 12 Aug
  • 10:45 am and 3:45 pm
  • The Grand Hotel

Any musician understands how tedious a single launch can be. Luckily, with guests like Clint Hyndman, Gerard Schalghecke, Asia Kwin Taylor and Arron Mawson, this panel will include exclusive tips and tricks in releasing music or swaying venue owners to give you that prime Saturday night residency.

Clint Hyndman’s experience as a venue owner of multiple establishments around the Peninsula will certainly come in handy here. Asia Kwin Taylor’s amazing advocacy for gender equality will hold some invaluable advice for women hoping to break into the traditionally male-dominated scene.

Live music

  • Monday 12 Aug
  • 11:45 am and 3:45 pm
  • God’s Kitchen

Accompanying this massive day of industry expertise is a carefully curated lineup of musicians who will showcase their own talent and provide the tunes for the day. Taking place at God’s Kitchen, local artist Emmie Li’s powerful pop and SugaTree’s unique Celtic folk will be the soundtrack for a delicious lunch.

Later on, the punk powerhouses Stiff Richards and the four-piece band Icky Sitch will ramp up the energy as event attendees gather around for some drinks. Word on the Peninsula is people are pretty keen to get around these bands, so make sure you arrive earlier to get a good spot.

Digital Marketing & Social Media panel

  • Monday 12 Aug
  • 9:15 am and 1:15pm
  • Bay Hotel

Ah, social media marketing. Many people claim to be social media gurus, but it’s incredibly rare to find someone who actually knows how to retain followers across platforms and turn that growth into dedicated fans.

With jack-of-all-trades Dallas Frasca, marketing professional Sarah Guppy and Cloud Solutions Architect Pete Whelan, any digital marketing and social media queries are sure to be answered.

Grants, Sponsorship and Event Partnership panel

  • Monday 12 Aug
  • 10:15 am and 2:45 pm
  • Bay Hotel

Unfortunately, the majority of musicians don’t know how to apply for grants or aren’t even aware of them in the first place. With Patrick Donovan’s prior experience at Music Victoria, he’ll most certainly be of use when querying about what grants are available. Heidi Luckhurst’s business management skills are sure to amplify your administration skills when it comes to the more tedious areas of running a band.

Songwriting workshops

  • 9:15 am and 1:15 pm
  • The Dubliner

Possibly one of the best aspects of this event is the incredibly rare chance to get some feedback on songwriting from extremely talented individuals. You’ve got three legendary music icons to choose from, including International Songwriting Competition finalist Aimee Francis, multi-award-winning Steve Romig, and keyboardist for Jon Stevens band Glenn Reither.

The Mornington Peninsula Music Industry Summit is on the horizon, so be sure to grab a ticket here and book your hot seat session here.
