The Victorian government has fast-tracked a massive housing development at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne's inner north-west.
Over 1000 new homes are coming to Moonee Valley Racecourse as part of a major transformation of the iconic venue.
Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny has today approved the Moonee Valley Racecourse development through the state’s Development Facilitation Program, making it the biggest project greenlit through the accelerated planning pathway.
Existing grandstands will be demolished to create space for 1092 new homes across four apartment buildings. Studios through to three-bedroom apartments are on the cards, with more than 500 build-to-rent homes included in the mix.

Beyond housing, the $709 million development brings a 184-room residential hotel and over 3,000 square metres of retail and office space to the area, with proximity to public transport, jobs and local amenities.
Green spaces are getting a boost too, with an extension of Tote Park planned alongside a new pedestrian link called Cox Place. A pocket park will pop up at the corner of Dean Street and Feehan Avenue.
This transformation sits within the broader Moonee Valley Racecourse redevelopment, which includes rebuilding the public grandstand after this month’s Cox Plate.
Since the program opened to residential development two years ago, more than 6,900 homes have been fast-tracked through this process. Victorian housing approvals and builds continue to lead nationally, backed by reforms including unlocking space near public transport and setting housing targets for local councils.
