After smashing box office records and thrilling audiences around the globe, the production has officially locked in its Melbourne debut, set to take over Her Majesty’s Theatre from September 2025.
Following a spectacular Australian premiere in Sydney earlier this year — where MJ The Musical earned not one but three standing ovations, including two mid-performance — Melbourne will be the next Australian city to experience the high-voltage theatrical sensation.
Brought to Australia by leading producer Michael Cassel in collaboration with original Broadway producers Lia Vollack, John Branca and John McClain, MJ is more than just a tribute — it’s a deep dive into the artistry, complexity, and global legacy of Michael Jackson, told through the lens of a pivotal moment in his career.

Set in 1992, MJ The Musical offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Dangerous World Tour, as seen through the eyes of an MTV journalist given rare access to Jackson’s inner circle. The story unfolds in Jackson’s rehearsal space, giving audiences a rare window into his creative genius, relentless drive, and the collaborative spirit that helped shape one of the most iconic performers in music history.
With a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (Ruined, Sweat) and direction and choreography by Tony and Olivier Award winner Christopher Wheeldon OBE, the show seamlessly blends narrative, dance, and over 25 of Jackson’s greatest hits, including Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Thriller, and Man in the Mirror.
The Melbourne run marks the fifth major international production of MJ since its Broadway premiere in 2022, following acclaimed seasons in London, Germany, and across the United States.
