Mildlife

Mildlife are a Melbourne-based, Australian psychedelic jazz fusion group formed in 2010. The quartet has built their reputation through mesmerising live performances across the globe.

The group released their third studio album, Chorus in March 2024. This latest release showcased their continued evolution in blending cosmic rock with electronic elements.

Ahead of the release, Beat Magazine wrote the latest album “reflects Mildlife’s unwavering adoration for 70s psychedelic and cosmic sounds. The album embraces a wide spectrum of influences, from Polish jazz to Italo disco and contemporary electronic sounds. It’s an exploration of cosmic compatibility and chemistry, symbolizing the rhythm of nature.”

“In contrast to their previous albums, Chorus stands out as Mildlife’s most optimistic record, a sonic celebration of their love for psychedelic and cosmic sounds. The band members take turns expressing their visions, creating a unified openness and humanity in their sound.”

The key to success

And, as Oliver Winn wrote for Beat Magazine ahead of the band’s Fed Square performance this March, this acclaim didn’t happen overnight.

“Mildlife’s key to success lies within their longevity. As drummer Jim Rindfleish puts it during our interview, Mildlife aren’t “a flash in a pan” band. Since their formation in 2010, the band has been working consistently to get to the place they’re at today.”

“When writing music, there’s a specific flow-state Mildlife aim to achieve each time they enter the rehearsal studio. The band prefers to write ideas on the spot, rather than planning what an album will look like ahead of time. This is perhaps why their music always feels so authentic and natural, as it’s all created in the moment.”

Their DJ sets offer a different perspective on their musical vision. Behind the decks, Mildlife can explore influences that inform their studio work. The format allows them to stretch beyond their own compositions into broader sonic territories.

The band’s approach to DJing mirrors their live philosophy. They build atmospheric journeys that transport listeners through carefully curated soundscapes. Each selection serves the greater narrative of the night.

Afrodisiac

Naarm-based Afrodisiac is a seasoned artist with a distinctive approach to music. Her sets navigate the spectrums of house, electronica and global club cuts with remarkable skill.

Over the years, Afrodisiac has played in various spaces nationwide, blending house music, electronica, and global club cuts with reworked classics to create captivating sets. Her passion for unapologetically interweaving Afrocentric sounds creates unique experiences.

2022 marked a significant year for Afrodisiac’s production career. She released debut tracks on compilations for Phenomena and Amniote Editions. These releases demonstrated her ability to translate her DJ sensibilities into original compositions.

Her animated compositions feature eccentric rhythms and basslines. The productions meld together for turbulent explorations of electronic music. Each track reflects her commitment to pushing boundaries within the electronic realm.

James Ware rounds out the lineup as another respected Melbourne DJ.
