The Melbourne Airport Best Newcomer Award has announced it’s nominees. The nominees are: Luke McGregor, Damien Power, Dayne Rathbone, and Steen Raskopoulos. The winner of the award will receive a trip to the Brighton Comedy Festival in the UK, and will be announced with The Barry, the Golden Gibbo, and several other awards this Saturday at Festival Club.
ONE-OFF: The ladies of MICF shine tonight with Upfront, a showcase of the finest female comedians at this year’s festival. Hosted by today’s MICF Daily guest Geraldine Quinn and her Spandex Ballet, the show will feature Claire Hooper, Hannah Gadsby, Cal Wilson, Loretta Maine, Josie Long, Bev Killick, The Kransky Sisters, Anne Edmonds, DeAnne Smith, Kate McLennan, Laura Hughes, Geraldine Hickey, Mooky Cornish, Urzila Carlson and Em Rusciano. REVIEW WRAP: Plenty more reviews have rolled in as the festival gets closer to closing. At Beat, Josh Earl delivers fresh laughs with a reprise of his show Josh Earl is a Librarian and Arj Barker has some brilliant moments in his show Go Time. In The Herald Sun, five stars have been given to Kitty Flanagan, with four and a half stars given to Sketch-ual Healing, and four stars to Darkness and Light, and Adam Hills. Over at The Age, Zoe Coombs Marr received five stars, with four stars given to School Dance, The Man Who Planted Trees, and Steen Raskopoulos. And the folks over at UK comedy website Chortle have given the thumbs up to Jon Bennett, John Conway, and Harley Breen.
2013 Comedy Festival venue Three Degrees has announced that it will be closing its doors after this year’s festival. The pub, which hosted ten shows across two rooms during this year’s fest has been a recent mainstay bringing the Comedy Festival to the QV. Shows hosted at the venue tonight include another edition of Comedy Pick ‘n Mix, plus shows from Katerina Vrana, Adam Francis and Dilruk Jayasinga, Simon Palomares, Paco Erhard, Doug, Gavin Baskerville, and Ross Daniels. Three Degrees is located in QV Square, on the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale Streets in the city.
If you are deaf or prefer your standup to be signed instead of said, you’re in luck. Seven shows at the festival have announced that they will be assisted in Auslan, the Australian sign language of the deaf. Shows on tonight in Auslan include Bart Freebairn in The Age of Wonder: 9.30pm at Spleen, and Gavin Baskerville – Crunch Time at 9.45pm at Three Degrees. Tomorrow, First Dog on the Moon: Cartoobs and Other Typos goes Auslan; 6pm at the Victoria Hotel. And Adam Hills – Happyism rounds things off with an Auslan edition, Sunday at 8.45pm.
Late Night special Dungeon Crawl show off their 20 sided die tonight in Carlton. Ben McKenzie and brother Richard McKenzie unleash their fantasy adventure at the Bella Union Bar at Trades Hall. The brothers will be joined by guests Lisa-Skye, Xavier Michelides, Rama Nicholas and Nicholas J Johnson. The adventure starts 11pm tonight, get your tickets from the Bella Union website, or at the door.
LATE NIGHT: Festival Club returns with an infomercial like offer – ten comedians for ten bucks. Tonight Danny McGinlay will host Toby Halligan, Khaled Khalafalla, Tegan Higginbotham, Rhys Nicholson, Nikki Britton, Michael Hing, Amos Gill, Angus Brown, Ivan Aristeguieta, Karl Chandler and Jason Chatfield. After the Comedy DJs SugaGlaze & SugaCain get people dancing. Get the laughs going 11.15pm tonight at the Hi-Fi Bar, tickets at the door.
