 Today’s MICF Daily News:

Last night at Festival Club, the 2013 festival awards were handed out. Here are the results:

– Beat writer Nick Taras took home the Funny Tonne, seeing over 147 shows during the 26 days of the festival.

– The Golden Gibbo for the festival’s best independent show went to Simon Keck for his show Nob Happy Sock.

– The Piece of Wood award, given out by comedians for comedians went to David Quirk.

– The Director’s Choice award, awarded by festival director Susan Proven was awarded to Mel Buttle.

– The People’s Choice award, previously only won by Wil Anderson went to Arj Barker.

– The Melbourne Airport Best Newcomer was awarded to Luke McGregor. Luke will win a trip to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to show off his stuff.

– And the Barry Award for festival’s best show went to in-form American Rich Hall.

A big congratulations goes out to all of the festival award nominees and winners.

SPECIAL EVENT: One more big special event takes place as part of the festival this evening. The 27th Brian McCarthy Memorial Moosehead Awards Benefit takes place tonight at the Town Hall. The Mooseheads acts as an festival incubator, giving money to daring and exciting shows in planning that otherwise wouldn’t get financial support until after MICF takes place. Past recipients have included This is Siberian HuskyGeraldine QuinnAxis of Awesome and Sam Simmons. The Moosehead Awards Benefit is a closing festival gala, featuring a selection festival’s top local and international acts. Usually the lineup is kept secret but one name has leaked out this year – the host of the evening – Justin Hamilton. See the Mooseheads benefit tonight – 8pm at the Town Hall. A small number of tickets remain for the event at Ticketmaster.

EXTRA SHOWS: It may be the final night of the festival, but you still have a few more chances to see some popular acts. Tonight, the following acts add extra shows:

Did you miss out on seeing Daniel Kitson during MICF? Believe it or not, you have one more chance. The beloved Englishman has added one more show – 1pm today at the Tuxedo Cat. The doors to the cat open at 12.15pm get your tickets from the venue.


WALKING TOUR: And if you don’t want to sit in a dark room and watch comedy today, why not go on a comedy walking tour?. Rod Quantock gets the tours going at 11am and 1pm today with his Fourth Annual Mystery Comedy Walking Tour – meet under the Portico at the Melbourne Town Hall. Tickets are on sale for the event from Ticketmaster – no tickets will be sold at the Meeting Point. But if you want to review the year 2013 (despite it only being April), Xavier Toby and Micah D Higbed lead their walking tour 2013 – When We Were Idiots at 2pm and 6pm. Meet at the Bourke & Willis Statue in the City, tickets from TryBooking and by the statue. 

ROADSHOW: Tonight may be the final evening of MICF, but the event doesn’t end with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow starting in Newport, Victoria and Cairns, Queensland this weekend. The roadshow brings a cast of festival favorites touring around Australia for the next four months. To find out of the roadshow is coming to your town, visit the Comedy Festival website.

2014 FESTIVAL: If you want to book in dates for next year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival, start getting to work. The festival will take place between Wednesday March 26 and Sunday April 20.

OTHER COMEDY: While the festival may end tonight, comedy keeps on going in Melbourne throughout the year. Spleen Bar hosts Comedy at Spleen on Monday nights at 8.30pm, but if you’re in St Kilda catch Local Laughs at the Local Taphouse. Puggs in Space returns to Pugg Mahones in the city, at 8.30pm every Tuesday. On Wednesday, Felix Bar Comedy in St Kilda takes place at 8.30pm with Checkpoint Charlie held at Eurotrash in Chinatown. And on Thursday you can see Five Boroughs Comedy at Five Boroughs Bar in the city, and Commedia Dell’Parte in St Kilda. For full listings of comedy shows throughout the year, check out beat.com.au.
