Today’s MICF Daily News: 


– We are currently in a transition stage of the festival, with a bunch of shows closing and a new bunch kicking off tonight and tomorrow. Shows that start their festival runs this evening include #bollardMicha D HigbedSarah Gaul, and Horses That Shoot Lasers From Their Eyes. A full list of shows on tonight at the festival is available at the Comedy Festival website.

– The Great Debate took place yesterday at the Melbourne Town Hall, with six master debaters going back and forth on the subject: That Actions Speak Louder Than Words. On the affirmative capain Paul McDermott teamed with Paul Foot and Eddie Pepitone. On the negative, captain Cal Wilson was teamed with Josh Thomas and Rich Hall. Corinne Grant acted as moderator. The special was taped for television, and will air later this year on Network Ten.

– REVIEW WRAP: Plenty more reviews have came in over the weekend, with plenty more stars falling from the sky and being awarded to festival shows. Avrille Bylok-Collard of Beat has declared FanFiction Comedy as a must-see this festival, with Mitch Alexander recommending Sam Simmons. Over at the Herald Sun, four and a half stars have been awarded to Em Rusciano, with four stars given to Faulty Towers: The Dining ExperienceAdam RozenbachsGraveyA Modern DeceptionBarry Morgan, and Michael Workman. The Age have awarded their first five star review to Hannah Gadsby, with four stars going to The Writers. Finally English comedy website Chortle has weighed in on the fest, recommending Andy Matthews and Tony BesselinkAndrew McClelland, and Luke McGregor.

– SPECIAL EVENT: Newport venue The Substation turns on the generators for another yearly special event – Ali McGregor’s Western Lullabies. McGregor, the host  of late night show Late-Nite Variety-Nite Night gathers together the Festival’s top comedians to sing their favourite lullabies and fables, raising money for the Western Chance charity. Doors open at 7.30pm tonight, get your tickets from TryBooking or at the venue.

– Did you miss out on Daniel Kitson tickets like many other comedy fans? Fear not – you have a few more chances to catch the acclaimed funny man at this year’s fest. The guys behind LOL Comedy have announced A Somewhat Secret Stand Up Comedy Show hosted by Kitson for tonight and next Monday. Starting at 8pm tonight, the show will take place at the Provincial Hotel on the corner of Brunswick and Johnson Streets in Fitzroy. Tickets on the door.

– Caught Bane 1 at Trades Hall and found yourself wanting more? Jon Bone’s action-adventure-comedy has two sequels, aptly titled Bane 2 and Bane 3 which have now been announced for this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at The Owl and The Pussycat in Richmond. Bane 2: The Beast Within takes place at the Owl on Thursday April 11 at 10.15pm, with Bane 3: Welcome to Sunnyview taking place on the Friday and Saturday at 10.15pm. – ON THE MOVE: A number of shows move from their venues tonight to festival central – the Melbourne Town Hall. Shows on the move for Monday’s include Jack Druce at 8.30pm, Rich Hall at 9pm, Luke Heggie and Jeff Green at 9.30pm, and Aunty Donna and the Fax Machine Shop at 9.45pm.

– There is no Festival Club this evening, but ABC2 comes to the rescue with Comedy Up Late – a series of half-hour comedy blocks taped just last week at The Hi-Fi Bar. Airing all week at 10.30pm, the show is hosted by Lawrence Mooney and features MICF comedians such as Josh ThomasSam SimmonsDeAnne SmithPete HolmesUrzila Carlson, and Trevor Noah.

– MONDAY SPECIALS: While Monday may be the traditional night-off for festival acts, tonight features a number of Monday only special shows. Forget about Festival Club by seeing some of these Monday specials:

– Festival showcase The Early Show kicks things off 6.15pm at the Exford Hotel.
– Kiwi pop culture addicts FanFiction Comedy bring on Wil Anderson and another special guest to spin stories – 7pm tonight at the Town Hall.
– Today’s MICF Daily guests The Little Dum Dum Club muckrake with a live podcast taping, 7.15pm at the Town Hall.
– Anthony Salame performs his new hour of stand-up – The Clown Prince, also at 7.15pm at the Town Hall.
– Comedy variety show The Shelf holds court at the Toff in Town 7.30pm tonight.
– Meanwhile in Fitzroy, comedy quiz show We Should Know Better gets the questions going at 7.30pm.
– Daniel Townes debuts at the 2013 festival with his show Against The Grain, 8.15pm at the Town Hall.
– While John Robertson asks you – can you find the exit to The Dark Room? Also at Town Hall at 8.15pm.
– Local Laughs in St Kilda returns for another edition at 8.30pm tonight. Also at 8.30pm, Comedy @ Spleen gets the laughs started at the top of town.
– Bev Killick goes “There”… Again, 8.30pm at the Town Hall.
– If you want to mix your comedy with karaoke why not try Comed-Oke’, 9pm at the Melbourne International Backpackers.
– Rob Hunter makes things awkward with festival guests during his Late O’Clock, tonight at 9.30pm.
– The peeps from Triple R’s Lime Champions’ present their Nightmare Tales, 9.45pm at the Town Hall.
– And wraping things up is standup showcase The After Party, 10.30pm tonight at the Exford Hotel.
