The Raw Comedy Grand Final took place last night at the Town Hall. Raw is Australia’s biggest open mic comedy competition, with 1096 newcomers from around Australia competing for the chance to fly Edinburgh and compete in the So You Think You’re Funny competition. Demi Lardner from South Australia won the final, with Queenslander Cameron Duggan and Victorian Andy Matthews running second and third respectively. If you weren’t able to attend, the final was filmed and will air on ABC2 Thursday May 9.
SPECIAL EVENTS: It wouldn’t be the final Monday of the festival without this special event – Music Mirth & Mayhem returns for its 15th edition tonight at The Hi-Fi Bar. Put on to benefit The Mirabel Foundation, the event features some of Melbourne’s finest comedians and musicians. Once again hosted by Lawrence Mooney in one of his few festival appearances this year, MMM15 will feature music from Tim Rogers, Ella Hooper, Rebecca Barnard, Mark Seymore; and comedy from Dave Hughes, Claire Hooper, Greg Fleet, and many more. Get the mayhem going at 7.30pm tonight, tickets from Ticketmaster and at the door.
The festival has added one more show to the official lineup. The Just for Laughs Showcase will once again take place as part of MICF 2013. Ran by the Montreal based festival promoter, the showcase will feature some of Australia’s young yet bright stars audition for places on festival bills in Montreal, Toronto, and Chicago. The showcase kicks off 5.30pm today at the Town Hall, tickets from Ticketmaster.
And one more unofficial show has popped up tonight as well. Yianni, an Australian comic who relocated to London some years ago has been popping up around many of the festival’s variety shows this fest, and now he will showcase his comedic skills in a one hour, one night only show this evening. Numb & Number, his Edinburgh Fringe show from 2012 will be performed 8pm tonight at the Ding Dong Lounge, Market Lane in the City. Get your tickets on the door.
Did you miss out on Daniel Kitson tickets like many other comedy fans? The man’s entire festival run is sold out, but if you didn’t snag a ticket you have one more chance to see him. The guys behind LOL Comedy have announced A Somewhat Secret Stand Up Comedy Show hosted by Kitson. The show kicks off at 8pm tonight, the show will take place at the Provincial Hotel on the corner of Brunswick and Johnson Streets in Fitzroy. Again, tickets on the door.
ON THE MOVE: A number of shows move from their venues tonight to festival central – the Melbourne Town Hall. Shows on the move for Monday’s include Jack Druce at 8.30pm, Luke Heggie and Jeff Green at 9.30pm, and Aunty Donna and the Fax Machine Shop at 9.45pm.
MONDAY SPECIALS: While Monday may be the traditional night-off for festival acts, tonight features a number of Monday only special shows. Forget about Festival Club by seeing some of these Monday specials:
– Festival showcase The Early Show kicks things off 6.15pm at the Exford Hotel.
– The Legal Comedy Debate asks the question – Can you find true love in intra-office relationships? The legal worms get to debatin’ 6:30pm tonight at the Athenaeum Theatre.
– Also at 6.30pm, the debut of Rich Fulcher at MICF 2013 at the Town Hall with his new show: Tiny Acts of Rebellion.
– Kiwi pop culture addicts FanFiction Comedy bring on the insanity of Lessons with Luis and Hannah Gadsby – 7pm tonight at the Town Hall.
– Also at 7pm, the super popular play from Sarah Collins and Attic Erratic – Choir Girl, also at the Town Hall.
– The Little Dum Dum Club muckrake with another live podcast taping, 7.15pm at the Town Hall.
– Anthony Salame performs his new hour of stand-up – The Clown Prince, also at 7.15pm, at the Town Hall.
– Comedy variety show The Shelf holds court at the Toff in Town 7.30pm tonight.
