Metro Tunnel project reports nearly 500 drivers are now trained for operations for ahead-of-schedule opening.

The Victorian government today announced that hundreds of drivers have completed training to operate through the Metro Tunnel’s twin tunnels and five underground stations.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams made the announcement at Anzac Station, confirming the project remains on track to open later this year.

Around 100 new drivers were recruited in 2022 specifically for the Metro Tunnel opening, completing a comprehensive 44-week training program. This intensive course included classroom instruction, simulator training and hands-on experience across the new network infrastructure.

Additionally, hundreds of existing drivers have received training on the Metro Tunnel’s new systems, including High Capacity Metro Trains, updated signalling technology and Victoria’s first platform screen doors.

Trial operations have seen drivers accumulate thousands of hours behind the controls, with test trains covering more than 265,000 kilometres through the system. This distance equates to more than six trips around the globe, providing extensive real-world testing of the new infrastructure.

Station staff training runs parallel to driver preparation, with more than 200 personnel preparing for operations across the five new stations. This workforce includes Station Masters, Senior Station Officers, Station Officers and Station Assistants, all learning the processes and procedures required for safe station operations.

Metro Tunnel represents Melbourne’s biggest rail network transformation in over 40 years. Once operational, the system will increase capacity in the existing City Loop, allowing more frequent services across additional lines throughout Melbourne’s rail network.

Platform screen doors mark a first for Victoria’s rail system, adding safety measures that align with international metro standards. High Capacity Metro Trains will provide increased passenger capacity compared to existing rolling stock across the network.

Construction progress indicates the project will open one year ahead of its original schedule.
