Lord Mayor candidate Arron Wood has proposed to expand the Melbourne Money program to include live music venues and nightclubs.

Arron Wood has announced plans to expand the Melbourne Money program to include live music events, aiming to provide additional support to hospitality venues within the City of Melbourne. The initiative, set to launch if Wood is elected in 2025, is designed to stimulate local businesses and enhance Melbourne’s world-renowned live music scene.

The revamped Melbourne Money program will allocate $5 million to continue the success of previous rounds, which generated an almost $100 million boost to the local economy. Under the new plan, a 20% rebate will be offered on spending between $50 and $500, covering the cost of food, drinks, and live music events. Eligible venues include pubs, bars, and nightclubs within the City of Melbourne.

Live music events held in stadiums such as the MCG, Rod Laver Arena, and AAMI Park, along with events at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and major theatres, will not be included in the program.

Independent Lord Mayor candidate and small business owner, Wood emphasised the importance of supporting musicians and venues that have faced significant challenges in recent years, particularly in the aftermath of COVID-19. “We want to not only support the musicians and artists but also the pubs and clubs that are so critical to Melbourne’s world-class live music scene,” Wood said. He highlighted the vital role smaller live music shows play in nurturing Melbourne’s emerging talent.

Deputy Lord Mayoral candidate Erin Deering, founder of the Australian swimsuit brand Triangl, added that Melbourne’s reputation for creativity and live music must be protected. “Melbourne is synonymous with creativity, and we want to support the artists and also the businesses that keep the live music industry pumping in Melbourne,” Deering said.

The Melbourne Money program will continue to provide rebates on meals at restaurants and cafes within the City of Melbourne. Wood noted the widespread popularity of rebate schemes across Australia, stating, “Everyone will still be able to get a rebate on lunch or dinner at their favourite restaurants – and we want everyone to get out and support these businesses.”

Team Wood’s five-point plan aims to revitalise Melbourne’s economy and cultural vibrancy, with the Melbourne Money program positioned as a key element in supporting local businesses and the live music industry. Find out more about the plan here.
