A welcome addition to the rooftop bar spots in Melbourne, On Top launched this Thursday 13 November at The StandardX in Fitzroy.

What was once a hotel-guests-only situation has been thrown open to the neighbourhood and anyone else who fancies a drink with a view. Sitting 60 people max, the latest rooftop bar in Melbourne, On Top, keeps things intimate rather than trying to pack in the crowds. Woods Bagot handled the architecture while Hecker Guthrie sorted the interiors; think warm tones and desert-style plants playing off Fitzroy’s gritty industrial bones.

Because this is Melbourne and the weather does whatever it wants, the whole space is weatherproof with a retractable roof and heating to keep things comfortable regardless of season.

Three signature cocktails anchor the list: Cloud Cover mixes apricot brandy with Aperol and ginger, Nude & Rude goes the mezcal route, while The Last Dance combines vodka with passionfruit. Standard stuff like Aperol Spritz, yuzu margaritas and tap lager fill out the rest.

Wine comes through a partnership with Australian importer Lo-Fi, focusing on Victorian producers doing low intervention and sustainable stuff. There’s also a Japanese vending machine dispensing pre-batched cocktails, wines and non-alcoholic options for anyone who likes their drinks with a side of novelty.

Local DJs take over on Friday and Saturday nights plus Sunday arvos, pulling sounds from ’90s Brooklyn, West African beaches and golden hour LA. It’s the kind of sonic backdrop that works whether you’re there for one drink or settling in properly.

This rooftop bar Melbourne spot fills a gap in Fitzroy’s drinking options; designed thoughtfully without being stuffy, accessible to the neighbourhood without turning into a free-for-all, and built to handle whatever Melbourne throws at it weather-wise. On Top works for late afternoon hangs or proper evening sessions, depending on what you’re after.
