The X’Trapolis 2.0 is the new design of trains coming to Melbourne as the state government seeks to improve public transport.

The $986 million project is expected to create at least 750 new jobs across Victoria. Using 60% locally sourced materials, Melbourne can expect 25 new X’Trapolis 2.0 metro trains in the next coming months.

The trains will be phased in along the Craigieburn, Upfield and Frankston lines, providing more accessibility which will be judged by various advocacy groups. For many disabled people, public transport doesn’t function entirely to their means. What these new lines of trains seek to do is improve accessibility as well as boost technological advancement.

Manufactured in Dandenong and assembled in Ballarat, the Labour State Government seeks to not only serve the public better transport, but also stick to their promise of strengthening the job market. “Victoria leads the nation in rolling stock manufacturing and expertise. The X’Trapolis 2.0 project is critical in solidifying local skills and knowledge-based right here in our great state.” Says Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll.

To try and make the public transport as acute as possible, the Labour Government has also partnered with Alstorm, The Centre of Excellence and the education sector to make sure as much thought and consideration goes into the design and accessibility of these trains.

“The new trains, in line with Alstom’s strategy to deliver greener and more sustainable mobility, will be more accessible, reliable and energy efficient. This important project will also pave the way for new, long-term employment opportunities in the rail industry, including multiple trainee and apprenticeships in regional Victoria,” says Mark Coxon, Alstom Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand.
