Victorian government talks for the hologram spectacular to be brought to Melbourne, collapse over funding disputes.

Negotiations between the Victorian government and ABBA Voyage organisers have officially collapsed. The state had been pursuing Melbourne as the first destination outside London for the revolutionary hologram concert experience.

ABBA Voyage representatives spent over 20 months in discussions with Australian promoters and state governments. Victoria emerged as the frontrunner after New South Wales withdrew early due to budget constraints.

The Herald Sun reported that promoter Paul Dainty, president and chief executive of TEG Dainty, confirmed the protracted talks had failed.

Russell Howcroft revealed the breakdown on 3AW’s The Rumour File. Sources confirmed the project would not proceed in Melbourne.

Victorian government officials had pitched for Melbourne to become the first city worldwide, outside London, to stage the Swedish supergroup spectacular.

Money proved the constant sticking point throughout negotiations. The Victorian government struggled with requests to provide up to $33 million of taxpayer funding.

The high-tech show requires sophisticated infrastructure to create its hologram effects. ABBA Voyage has proven hugely successful in London, drawing international audiences to its purpose-built venue. Discussions included building a 3000-seat arena at Flemington.

The Victorian government’s decision reflects broader scrutiny of public spending on entertainment projects. Officials weighed the substantial upfront investment against potential tourism and economic benefits.

ABBA Voyage organisers now face the challenge of identifying alternative Australian venues. Other states may reconsider their positions following Victoria’s withdrawal from negotiations.

The collapse ends months of speculation about Melbourne hosting the groundbreaking production. Industry insiders had anticipated the announcement would boost the city’s reputation as a major entertainment destination.

ABBA Voyage began in London in May 2022. By September 2023 it has sold more than 1.5 million tickets and generated $150 million in sales. The London show is performed seven times a week and generates a weekly income of $2 million.
