“This extension marks a critical milestone for the North East Link project..."

The construction has moved forward with the extension of the Hurstbridge Line’s rail tunnel, which, once completed, will span nearly half a kilometre. This makes it the third longest tunnel on Melbourne’s train network, following the Metro Tunnel and the City Loop.

The newly extended tunnel is designed to support a key infrastructure goal for the North East Link: allowing the M80 Ring Road to pass over the Hurstbridge Line between Grimshaw and Elder streets in Watsonia. This project is intended to create a smooth transit route between Melbourne’s eastern and northern suburbs while supporting future transit and traffic needs.

As part of the recent construction, workers lifted 26 concrete beams to form the south section of the new Grimshaw Street bridge deck. This structure will eventually serve as a critical interchange, linking Greensborough Highway, the North East Link, and the M80 Ring Road, making it easier for commuters to navigate the area.

Alongside the bridge construction, teams installed 72 precast concrete panels forming the western wall of the extended tunnel. The tunnel extension beneath Greensborough Highway is expected to support the integration of Melbourne’s road and rail networks as infrastructure evolves in the region. The new Grimshaw Street bridge is planned as a multi-functional interchange that connects major routes in the area.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan commented on the project’s progress, stating, “This extension marks a critical milestone for the North East Link project and positions Melbourne’s rail infrastructure for growth.”

Further upgrades on the Hurstbridge Line are scheduled for next year, with the continued tunnel extension and bridge works slated for completion in 2026.
