Nine-car VLocity trains will roll onto the Melton Line, Melbourne from 2027, delivering bigger capacity for commuters.

Passengers travelling from the west of Melbourne are set for a major upgrade with the introduction of nine-car VLocity trains on the Melton Line arriving one year ahead of the original timeline.

Running these extended trains will boost passenger capacity by a massive 50% during peak services, giving commuters much more breathing room during busy morning and afternoon rushes.

This upgrade forms part of the broader Melton Line Upgrade project, designed to future-proof public transport for Melbourne’s rapidly growing western suburbs.

Beyond simply providing more space, the nine-car VLocity Melbourne trains will come equipped with additional doors for smoother boarding and alighting.

Platform extensions are already planned for four of the line’s busiest stations to accommodate the longer trains. Cobblebank, Rockbank, Caroline Springs and Deer Park stations will all receive extended platforms, while the new Melton Station is being built with longer platforms from the ground up.

Supporting the new service will be a purpose-built stabling yard in Cobblebank, positioned approximately 700 metres east of the new Melton Station. This facility will house the extended trains overnight and ensure they’re positioned at Melton Station ready for the first services to Southern Cross each morning.

Construction on both the stabling yard and platform extensions for the new Melbourne trains is scheduled to begin in early 2026. The Victorian government has coordinated these works with the Melton level crossing removal project to minimise disruption for passengers and the local community.

While the stabling yard will operate around the clock for train cleaning and maintenance, authorities have committed to keeping noise impacts minimal for nearby residents. Traffic on Abey Road and surrounding streets may experience minor delays during construction as equipment and materials are transported to the site.
