Melbourne Symphony Orchestra brings Gershwin works back to life

Some of the best 20th-century compositions are getting a 21st-century twist.

The tunes of one of America’s greatest 20th-century composers George Gershwin are being re-envisioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra later on this year.

As part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, kicking off in May, Gershwin Reimagined highlights the iconic compositions with some of the hottest jazz acts in 2019. The show will feature the jazz vocals of Laura Mvula and the hip hop stylings of José James, while the MSO fills in the rest of the US jazz legend’s rambunctious rhapsodies. The works are being performed by the MSO as interpreted by conductor Troy Miller.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a celebration of the Gershwin classics without his most well-known pieces, and the MSO will certainly be performing renditions of ‘Embraceable You’, ‘Summertime’, ‘I Got Rhythm’ and more. It’s time to get a little jazzy.
