Melbourne seniors just scored completely free public transport

Melbourne free public transport seniors travel
words by staff writer

Victorian Seniors Card holders can now ride trains, trams and buses without paying a cent.

The Victorian government has announced free public transport for all seniors card holders for any train, tram, bus or coach services across metro Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Coinciding with the Victorian Seniors Festival, more than 650,000 eligible seniors can hop on any public transport without opening their wallets, during the festival period from 5-12 October.

Card holders just need to carry their card while travelling and touch on and off with their seniors myki as usual, but no fare gets charged. On non-myki services, simply show your card to the conductor or bus driver.

This eight-day freebie is just the start of bigger things to come. From 1 January 2026, Victorian Seniors Card holders will get free weekend travel statewide year-round.

October marks the 43rd year of Victoria’s Seniors Festival, featuring more than 3,000 free or low-cost events and activities across the state. This year’s theme Connect, Create, Celebrate encourages older Victorians to build social connections, discover new interests and embrace positive ageing through everything from country concerts to abseiling adventures.

Festival highlights include Songs of Judy Garland performances, ACMI Seniors Film Festival screenings, abseiling at Mount Buffalo and 1800s themed walking tours. Whether you’re into line dancing, mass ukulele sessions or tai chi, there’s something happening in your neighbourhood.

Opening day on Sunday 5 October brings the annual Celebration Day to Federation Square, transforming the precinct with entertainment including line dancing workshops, mass ukulele play-alongs and tai chi demonstrations. It’s the perfect excuse to test out that free transport and see what all the fuss is about.

Regional seniors shouldn’t feel left out either, with coach services included in the free travel offer. Country towns across Victoria are hosting their own festival events, from small town concerts to heritage walks, so you can explore beyond your usual stomping grounds without the transport costs adding up.
