Melbourne power pop veterans Icecream Hands are playing a Christmas show at Northcote Social Club

Words by staff writer

Looking to inject some vintage Melbourne charm into your playlist? The boys from Icecream Hands have something special brewing.

The power pop legends have just unleashed Back On The Road, the first glimpse of their forthcoming album Giant Fox Pineapple Tree, which drops on 7 November. It’s the follow-up to their 2020 return effort No Weapon But Love, which marked the end of a 13-year break.

This new track dives into the bittersweet territory of watching loved ones spread their wings and chase their dreams. The song showcases everything that made Icecream Hands a household name – those chiming guitars, rock-solid rhythms and harmonies that could melt butter. It’s classic power pop territory that nods to everyone from The Beatles to Big Star.

Icecream Hands

  • 13 December, Petersham Bowling Club, Sydney (album launch)
  • 20 December, Northcote Social Club, Melbourne (Christmas show album launch)

Check out our gig guide here.

The Melbourne five-piece originally formed back in 1992 and built their reputation across seven albums, including the ARIA-nominated Sweeter Than The Radio in 1999. After more than a decade pursuing separate projects, they regrouped in 2020 and have been winning over audiences ever since. Their annual Christmas gig has become something of a Melbourne institution.

The current lineup features Marcus Goodwin and Charles Jenkins sharing vocal and guitar duties, David Milne on keys, Douglas Lee Robertson covering bass, guitars and vocals, and Derek G Smiley behind the kit.
