Melbourne petrol prices will be capped daily with Servo Saver phase two passing parliament, requiring fuel retailers to set maximum prices.
Victorian government’s Fair Fuel Plan expansion passed through parliament, enshrining phase two of Servo Saver in legislation with capped Melbourne petrol prices. Minister for Government Services Natalie Hutchins said the next phase will improve Servo Saver and ensure Victorians get the best deal possible at the petrol pump.
Launched last month on the Service Victoria app, Servo Saver is already saving Victorian motorists up to $333 a year at the pump by requiring fuel retailers to report price changes in real time. It puts money back in drivers’ pockets and helps alleviate cost-of-living pressures.

Phase two requires fuel retailers to set a maximum fuel price for the following day. For 24 hours, retailers can only lower prices, not increase them. People will be able to check their local area for which service station offers the best price throughout the next day.
It’s designed to enable motorists to make informed decisions about where to fill up. Instead of fuel prices jumping up unexpectedly, drivers will know the maximum price in advance and can plan their fill-ups accordingly.
Real-time price reporting means the days of driving around hunting for the cheapest petrol are over. Service Victoria app shows current prices across different service stations, making it easy to find the best deal without wasting fuel on the search itself.
Victorian government is focused on helping people with cost-of-living pressures. Servo Saver builds on other initiatives like the $100 power saving bonus and free public transport launching next year for children and seniors on weekends.
Fuel costs hit household budgets hard, especially for people who need to drive for work or live in areas with limited public transport options. Saving a few cents per litre adds up quickly when filling up regularly, putting hundreds of dollars back into people’s pockets each year.
Maximum daily pricing for Melbourne petrol prices creates transparency in the fuel market. Retailers can still compete on price by lowering their rates throughout the day, but they can’t suddenly jack up prices and catch drivers off guard. It’s a system that works for consumers while still allowing market competition.
