Melbourne journalist-turned-musician Salli Edwards releases genre-spanning album, ‘Revolving Doors’

It’s time to get to know Salli Edwards.

Salli Edwards has a unique story. A former journalist, Edwards made a career out of breaking news stories, writing snappy headlines and exploring all manner of topics from crime to entertainment, politics and beyond.

More recently, Edwards has shifted her gaze towards songwriting, and in 2020, she delivered her debut solo album, Revolving Doors. The album is a melting pot of Edwards’ inspirations, exploring everything from ’90s alt-rock on the Liz Phair-steeped opener, ‘Falling Deep into the Sea’, to the trip hop feel of ‘Damage’ and the buoyant ‘Anticipation’.

Born in Tokyo, Edwards has lived all across the world, first establishing herself in Canberra, before residing in Manila, Milan and San Francisco. As she cut her teeth as a journalist, music was always in her back pocket.

Listening to everything from grunge to jazz, electronica and ’60s folk and pop across the journey, Edwards also became interested in the music of esteemed American composer Burt Bacharach. Such influence seeps through in track five of Revolving Doors, ‘How Was I Supposed to Know’.

Elsewhere, there’s the pandemic-inspired ‘Traces’ and ‘Chasing the Sun’, the Santana-like swagger of ‘Kayenta’, and ‘Nothing Looks the Same in the Light’ – a George Michael cover that’s feels like a microcosm of Revolving Doors in its entirety.

Having represented one half of the band High Drama in San Francisco in the past, and more recently fronting Canberra band Beautiful Lucy’s Room – which regularly emerged on the local gig circuit, Edwards is no stranger to the stage.

Where she takes Revolving Doors, however, we’ll have to wait and see.
