City-wide rooftop fireworks, free celebration zones across the city, a zero-alcohol family-friendly New Years Eve party and now, 100,000 glittery hats for free.

The City of Melbourne has confirmed that it will give the hats – we’re still waiting on photos – to attendees of the New Year’s Eve celebrations across the CBD this year, as part of plans to continue the reinvigoration of Melbourne following the lengthy Covid lockdowns.

There will be 100,000 hats given out to people in a fairly huge NYE initiative, with Lord Mayor Sally Capp confirming on ABC Radio that the hats would be 100% recyclable and form part of the council’s wider sustainability program.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

“We are giving out sparkly New Year’s Eve hats this year to really get everybody in the mood, you need to come to one of our celebration zones we’re expecting lots of families to get in the swing of things.

“The hats are fully recyclable, they’ll be not only adding to the vibe but of course part of our waste management plan to ensure that those hats, among all the other paraphernalia that people bring in with them to celebrate New Year’s Eve, are picked up and managed well.”

There are sparse details about what the hats will actually look like at this stage, although sparkles and glitter have been confirmed, with the City of Melbourne’s 2023/24 NYE motto ‘All That Sparkles’ encouraging people to dress to the nines to bring in the new year.

“If it means that people don’t buy other things…they can make the most of our 100% recyclable hats to get into the vibe of the night, we think that’s a really positive thing. We’re giving them out at our celebration zones, which means we’re encouraging people to come to those free zones where we know we’re going to be able to disperse crowds, that creates a lot of safety on the night.”
