A new Little India precinct is being built in Melbourne's east, as part of a new project to boost homes and jobs in Dandenong.

The Victorian government has taken a significant step towards bringing hundreds of new homes and jobs to Dandenong, with the approval of a key stage in the Revitalising Central Dandenong Initiative.

This phase will see the creation of a vibrant Little India precinct, alongside substantial residential and commercial developments.

The development, led by Melbourne-based developer Capital Alliance, is set to inject $600 million into the local economy and sustain around 2,600 construction jobs. The Little India precinct will be at the heart of this transformation, enhancing Dandenong’s appeal as a cultural and economic hub.

Initiated by the Labor Government in 2006, the Revitalising Central Dandenong project is expected to attract over $1.2 billion in private sector investment and sustain up to 5,000 jobs. The Metro Tunnel, opening ahead of schedule in 2025, will further boost Dandenong’s connectivity, providing faster access to jobs, hospitals, and education.

Minister for Development Victoria Colin Brooks highlighted the significance of the project: “Dandenong is booming and we’re ensuring more homes and jobs are created closer to public services, so local families can access everything they need, close to where they live.”

Member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams emphasised the impact of the new precinct: “We’re turning this area into a vibrant new neighbourhood with hundreds more homes and jobs, right on top of a dining and entertainment precinct.”

Capital Alliance CEO and founder Mohan Du added, “The approval of the Planning Scheme Amendment signifies an important milestone in the delivery of this generational Masterplan vision which is to transform Central Dandenong into Melbourne’s second capital city.”

Development Victoria will continue to work with Capital Alliance to finalise the Development Plan, which will require final approval before construction begins.
