You got started on the Hammond B3 at the age of two. How did you get into that? My mother is probably the source. She played several instruments, and having the opportunity to play in a church with music based around the organ weekly, I grew to the instrument very naturally. I love how the organ has this amazing ability to play all the parts and that’s impressed me since I was a little kid.
Who are your biggest influences? My biggest influences are hard to name because there are so many. James Brown, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Andrae Crouch, James Cleveland, Prince, D’Angelo, Earth Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson. The list probably goes much deeper. Love the Beatles. Okay, I’ll stop there.
How did the Funk Apostles come about? About two years away from the band’s first gig, I had a vision to finally play music in a way I enjoyed best. Once I made the decision to actually start the band, I found each member individually and told them all what I wanted to do. Shockingly two years later, we’re still together and making music.
Who’s on the top of your playlist at the moment? Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino – lots of current music. There’s a lot out there and of course at any moment music from the ‘70s. The golden era.
What’s something we may not know about you? I love basketball – I wanna be a coach in college or something.
