Melbourne cosmic cowboy Ben Mastwyk is launching his new album this weekend

Words by staff writer

Ben Mastwyk unveils Grease meets The Big Lebowski-inspired clip ahead of his fourth album Let Me At The Night.

Ben Mastwyk has released the video for Reputation ahead of his new album launch.

The Melbourne country artist describes the clip as Grease meets The Big Lebowski, featuring a country party at Keys Bowling Alley complete with mechanical bull, line dancing and bowling. Ben Mastwyk shot the video over two sessions, capturing the hoedown extravaganza in full swing before returning after hours for additional scenes including an iconic slide down the bowling alley.

The video accompanies a song that takes aim at gossipmongers and haters, born from whispers and talk around town about the artist and his crew. Ben Mastwyk embraces the attention, suggesting that if people are talking about you, then you’re making an impact.

Let Me At The Night represents a fantasy record for Ben Mastwyk, pushing boundaries with his band The Millions after receiving funding through a Creative Victoria Creative Works grant. Working with producer Michael Hubbard at The Shrimp Shack studio in Melbourne, the artist initially aimed for a 90s country-inspired sound but found himself leaning into the genre-bending experimental approach he first explored in the actual 90s.

The 13-track album serves as a kaleidoscopic ode to country music possibilities, spanning hot-wired boogie to rhinestone pop, honky-tonk electronic disco to country space-ballads. Ben Mastwyk visualises the album as a spaceship designed to lift off and hit warp speed, with songs crafted for festivals and bigger crowds rather than the intimate venues of his earlier work.

The cosmic cowboy recently tested the new material live at Tamworth Country Music Festival across three nights, achieving the big party energy he aimed for. The album picks up where his previous records left off in the barroom before blasting further into space, featuring contributions from his amorphous musical collective The Millions including Michael Hubbard, Patrick Wilson, Craig Kelly and pedal steel player Shane Reilly.

Ben Mastwyk’s evolution from intimate songwriter to interstellar troubadour reflects his creative ambition to explore country music’s experimental possibilities while maintaining the narrative-based approach that defines his writing.
