Indie Comic Con is dedicated to providing a market for indie creators and promoting the craft of sequential art. The event has a big focus on books rather than the TV shows and movies that major comic con events tend to focus on now. This year the day will show the work of over 40 comic artists from all over Australia.

Indie Comic Con started when two local Melbourne comic artists where turned away for displaying their art at a major Melbourne comic convention. Disappointedly, the event used the space that could have been used to host local artists as a place for fan art and merchandise. If a comic book creator can’t exhibit their work at a comic book convention, where are they to showcase their work? One of the refused artists realised the lack of opportunities for local independent Melbourne comic artists to share their work and decided to fill the gap in the market.

2017 is the first year Indie Comic Con will run. As it is still finding its feet, the convention has a Kickstarter that will help the organisers cover the cost of venue hire, staff and insurance. Thankfully, it has successfully reached its goal of $6,000. However, it’s still possible to add to the donations, if you’d like to contribute check out the kickstarter here.
