Meet Fluffy Torpedo, Fitzroy’s funkiest new ice cream shop

Fluffy Torpedo is named after the owners’ dog, who is fluffy, and fast like a torpedo.

With a floor made from sour strap lollies, abstract art adorning the walls, and a bench-top homage to a gingerbread house – Fluffy Torpedo is a new ice cream shop at 5/159 Smith Street in Fitzroy, which opened just a few days ago.

In addition to the decor twist, the owners also donate 50 cents from every scoop sold to the Australian charity The Life You Can Save, which they hope will amount to around $80,000 per year. So thoroughly worth a peek-in, we reckon.

The owners are Cherry Rainflower and Adam Semple. They sold the cult-followed Stampede Gelato in Perth to move over to Melbourne and begin again – Cherry was a professional ballet dancer and Adam was a professional cyclist, before he turned to ice cream after injuring his back.

“Our store is eclectic in the sense that there are abstract artworks to interact with, the ceiling is a lovely glossy orange, the floor is made out of sour-strap lollies, and our bench top is a homage to the gingerbread house,” Ada says.

“Our kitchen is open with no walls at all separating it from the store, which was tasked with creating an enjoyable work environment for our chefs, as well as giving members of the public an unfiltered view of what’s going into their ice creams.

“We designed and built reusable tasting sticks out of 316 stainless steel so they outlive the store! They’re exquisite abstract shapes that we designed and meticulously ground and polished, and we wash them each night.”

Cherry and Adam designed and built the store furniture from wood they reclaimed by pulling down the walls in the tenancy. The floor is made of 200kg of sour strap lollies, embedded in 900kg of clear epoxy. And even their embroidered menu has a community touch, made by Eltham Studios

They’re also partnered with St. David Dairy, a Melbourne micro-dairy, that operates two streets away from the store.
