Meet Auckland rap duo Eno x Dirty, coming to Melbourne for ‘the best live rap show you’ll ever see in your fucking life’

Eno x Dirty
Words by Niam Hegarty

Eno x Dirty bring their intense and illuminating live hip-hop show to Melbourne as part of Ferdydurke’s 10th-anniversary festival, ‘A Life Aloft’ which takes place from November 3-6 at Ferdydurke.

The popular Auckland-based hip-hop duo will be presenting their lush jazz and soul-influenced hip-hop to bring down the house as part of the final night of the A Life Aloft festival in Tattersalls Lane in the heart of the Melbourne CBD on November the 6th.

Legendary Auckland-based hip hop due Eno X Dirty are a huge addition to the mini-festival that celebrates Ferdydurke’s 10th anniversary. The popular Melbourne loft venue is a hub of leisure, pleasure, quality liquor and epic parties, and Eno X Dirty will be just one of the many acts playing the massive 10th anniversary lineup that runs from November the 3rd to the 6th culminating in the well-regarded hip-hop group headlining on Sunday the 6th of November.

Other acts on the bill include Nay Nay, Savage The Girl, Elysia, Acid Chess Club and many, many more.

For the uninitiated, Eno x Dirty are a central component of Auckland’s illustrious collective Young Gifted and Broke. The Grey Lynn heroes display many of the lush jazz and soul influences the collective is known to incorporate. The duo spits out their patented social commentaries over blazed beats, whilst being well-known for bringing the fire to venues across New Zealand!

The duo hit the ground running with the hit, Shampoo and Conditioner in 2017, which was followed by two well-received albums in the way of, Evil Adventures & Happy Endings and Honest To Whom. Their explosive live show was captured with the Live at Rhythm and Vines EP with footage of the performance available here.

Heading over to Australia to bring their explosive live show to Melbourne in November the group will perform with Lucfr (Live), Winters along with Spliff Curtis on Sunday the 6th of November. The show kicks off at 8pm to end the epic Fergyduke weekend celebrations. We sat down with the pair to discuss what makes them tick and the upcoming jaunt to Melbourne.

A somewhat elusive pair, the group likes to let the music do the talking, Dirty says that in terms of lyrical content and musicality, “It depends on the vibe of the song, I don’t like to get too deep when I write, so 10% of the time there may be a certain theme or topic to stick to, but personally it can get frustrating having to stay on topic or with a story, especially if I come up with a dope line that has nothing to do with the song. So, the other 90% of the time I’m just shooting the shit trying to make it sound dope.”

When talking about the NZ hip hop scene Eno mentions that he believes it’s stronger than ever, with a lot of young talent keeping them on their toes and an epic crop of world-class music coming out of Auckland.

For what it’s worth, he sees Australia as perhaps a more rock-based Australian scene, but they are keen to find out more.

The pair admit that although the year has been laid back in terms of live shows and musical output, the most recent single GETURSELF2GETHA/UTU arriving in 2020, they are looking to do a lot of writing over summer and play more shows. Dirty says that Australian crowds can expect, “The best live rap show you’ll ever see in your fucking life” and addresses the lack of information about the pair online, repeating – not for the last time in our brief relay – that they are more inclined to let the music speak for itself.

Eno explains that they do have new material that they may test out for Melbourne audiences at the Ferdydurke 10th-anniversary party and Dirty adds, “I really love Melbourne, I can’t wait to see all my peeps who made the move, hopefully make some music, eat some good food and ride some free trams.”

You can check out Eno x Dirty perform at Ferdydurke on Sunday the 6th of November. More info about the weekend’s events can be found online at the Ferdydurke Facebook event. Find the duo on Spotify here, and follow them on Instagram here.
