The three-storey, 4000-square-metre superstore is expected to be the biggest retail opening since Myer opened on Bourke Street 100 years ago, according to Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece.

The space offers 200 beauty brands alongside books, a wellness apothecary and skin treatment clinics. Customers can also visit an in-store hairdresser, nail salon and florist.

The Mecca Bourke Street store stands three times larger than Mecca’s current Sydney flagship.

Mecca founder and co-CEO Jo Horgan hopes the flagship becomes a local institution. She compares it to Melbourne’s AFL, the National Gallery of Victoria and laneway coffee culture.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan joins 2000 people who have confirmed attendance for Friday’s opening.

The company recruited 300 staff specifically for this location. Yarra Trams will suspend services on routes 86 and 96 between Russell Street and Queen Street on opening day from 7am-11am.

The building preserves its heritage as the world’s former largest bookseller. Original floors received polishing and renewal. Aztec-inspired tiles from the original structure remain intact. Studio McQualter designed the interior as a love letter to Melbourne.

Twenty-four artworks by female artists feature throughout the store. Charlotte Day, director of the Potter Museum of Art and Buxton Contemporary, specially commissioned these pieces.

Mecca Bourke Street Cafe Mecca also stocks exclusively Melbourne-born brands.
