March to The Beast: Buddhist punk, doom-rock and prog fusion to set The Beast alight this month

live music Melbourne
Words by Ewen Stewart

The Beast is the heartbeat of Brunswick East.

Lively, great eats and just the right amount of sleaze – The Beast is an effortless choice no matter what’s on (and there’s always something on). In manic March, the bar’s got a big lineup of performers set to grace the stage.

They’ll also be hosting their tried-and-true weekday favourites including Trivia Tuesdays for the quiz-heads, and Deep Fried Comedy on Thursdays for those who love a laugh, hosted by Belal HS and Max Flett.

On weekends, it’s bands galore, and entry is free (that’s more money you can spend on beers). Want to know who’s playing? Look no further.

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

FRENZEE (GR)

  • Friday 8th March
  • With star/TIME and Persecution Blues

Prepare to be pummelled in the eardrums till they bleed, by the Melbourne-born Greek trio of siblings that make up FRENZEE. If you’re into hard thrashing melodic punk-rock don’t miss this one on the 8th March with support from the prog/funk chaos of 7-piece, star/TIME and energetic rock’n’rollers, Persecution Blues.

Pretty Moi

  • Saturday 9th March
  • With Echo Social Club and Peach Fuzz

Join psychedelic indie-rockers Pretty Moi to launch their new single ‘YDHTW’ on the 9th of March. The infectious energy of this 6-piece is palpable and is sure to light up The Beast stage and dance-floor alike. With support from rock’n’roll power duo Echo Social Club and the 4-piece indie-rock of Peach Fuzz, this is sure to be a night to please the senses.

Dr Colossus

  • Sunday 10th March
  • With Skin Thief and FLY!

Are you a heavy head? Do you like The Simpsons? Then you’ve met your match as Dr. Colossus, the iconic Simpsons-themed Doom-Rock band, makes their triumphant return to The Beast! You can’t miss the melodic, head-thumping magic that Dr. Colossus crafts onto the stage – it’ll make your mind and eyes melt in tandem. Joined by psychedelic post-rock savages, Skin Thief, and the high-voltage turbo-shredders, FLY! This lineup is HEAVY with a capital H, so prepare your knees for some serious weight.

Buddhadatta (JPN)

  • Thursday 14th March
  • With Velvet Parade

The tribal rock sound of Japanese Buddhist punks, Buddhadatta is effing’ wild! You won’t know whether to thump along at the back, start a pit or watch quietly in awe (confused but undeniably amazed). With support coming from bedroom-rocker Velvet Parade, Buddhadatta are only in AUS for a brief-stint before heading back to Japan; this is not one to miss.

Busted Chops

  • Friday 15th March
  • With ARAMINTA

Get lost in the incredible floating horns and grooves of all-star funk fusion outfit Busted Chops. Be careful when you enter The Beast on the 15th of March cause you might just lose all sense of where you are, as the erratic dips and jives will make you forget all your problems (at least for an hour). The boogie will start early with support from groovy indie-folkster, ARAMINTA. Busted Chops are celebrating the release of ‘Changes’, the first taste off of their new collaboration album titled ‘Family Dinner’.

Boggle

  • Saturday 16th March
  • With special guests

The proggy jazz/punk fusion of Boggle is sure to make your burgers taste EXTRA juicy on the 16th of March at The Beast! Think King Krule meets IDLES meets Black Country, New Road. An aggressive blend of horns, and heavy guitar lines that make your top lip curl. Joined by special guests on the night, this ain’t to be missed.

The Dead Amigos

  • Friday 22nd March
  • With JAG

Classic pub rock outfit The Dead Amigos grace The Beast stage on the 22nd of March for a night of killer guitar solos, driving drums and sing-along choruses. A band that would make Jet and Wolfmother proud. Joined on the night by funky rockers JAG; the perfect Aussie rock night is set.

Steppers

  • Saturday 23rd March
  • With Bloody Ripper

The chill, experimental funk machine that is Steppers, are set to take The Beast by storm on the 23rd of March to release their second single ‘Friend To Hold’. If first single ‘Funkovski’ is anything to go off, the groove and vibe of this mid-march Saturday night WILL NOT miss. The Beast will be rockin’, with support from thumping Aussie punk outfit Bloody Ripper.

Elektronik Girl Epic

  • Thursday 28th March
  • With DigitalGirl, third support tbc

28th March. The Beast is going to go HARD with club beast Elektronik Girl Epic locked in to set the stage on fire. Try not to move! I dare you! Bass and drums will be crunching through the interior of the building, ripping it to shreds. Joined by hyperpop artist Digital Girl, this is gonna be a crazy one.

Freud and the Family Solution

  • Friday 29th March
  • With Mercy Please, Nils Cusack

Freud and the Family Solution are your quintessentially Australian alt-rockers. Completely unrecognisable and unique in the way they produce music, yet somehow so familiar. The relatable aussie content of their songwriting will make you groove and nod along without hesitation. Supported by Mercy Please and Nils Cusack, this is sure to be a weird night of kooky rock music.

Susan

  • Saturday 30th March
  • With ScarnOn, third support tbc

Susan is bringing their nu-metal, reminiscent of early 2000s metal, back to relevancy with a fresh emphasis on groove and attitude. It’s giving Rage Against the Machine, it’s giving Audioslave. The walls of The Beast are set to shake on the 30th of March, with amps pumped and drum skins beaten to a pulp. Joined by the ‘Heckle Rock’ of Scarn-On, come down for a night of wreckage.

Udder Ubductees

  • Sunday 31st March
  • With support

Seeing the month off with a punch is the Party-Punk herd, aptly named Udder Ubductees. Thrashing their way through farm animals and tractor beams, the cow-themed quartet are sure to make you rethink your thoughts on the popular black and white beefcake (for good or bad). Paired perfectly with both the beef and plant-based burger from The Beast (depending on your reaction to the Udder Ubductees).
