Live Music Census 2012 Report Announced

The Victorian Live Music Census, which was carried out by Music Victoria in partnership with the City of Melbourne, NMIT and over 100 student volunteers, found that on a typical Saturday night 97,000 patrons attend Melbourne’s live music venues and 900 musicians, 740 DJs, 237 production staff and 2,730 venue staff are employed.

Melbourne boasts at least 460 live music venues and live music contributes more than a $1billion to the Victorian economy per annum.

The survey also discovered the preferred media of music fans, notably that “print media – especially the Street Press, has managed to maintain a very strong position.”

Beat has consolidated its position as music lovers’ favourite music publication, rising to 67% of music fans naming it as their favourite music publication, up from 59% in 2010/2011. As the report states, “Beat remains the dominant favoured music publication – as it has been since our first report in 2000.”

Youtube reigns supreme as the dominant online music source, easily beating out other giants iTunes and Facebook. In the relatively nascent realm of online music subsription, Spotify has established itself as the favoured service by a large margin.
