The beloved live music venue in Melbourne's north is set to close its doors, marking the end of an era for the city's live music scene.

The Gaso, renowned for championing emerging artists and hosting raucous nights of “rhythm & booze”, announced the news via social media yesterday.

The venue’s management is actively seeking new operators to take over the space, emphasising their commitment to preserving the venue’s cultural legacy in Melbourne’s live music landscape.

“We are currently on the market looking for someone to take over operations with as minimal disruption as possible to someone who wants to maintain our venues legacy,” the team wrote in their announcement. “For now though, our last day of trading will unfortunately be the 31st March.”

The closure announcement has sent shockwaves through Melbourne’s music community, with the venue calling on punters to support their final month of operation. “We’d love for you to show your support by packing this place out for what could be our final gigs ever!” the post read. “Check out what’s coming up and get yourself some tickets.”

The Gaso established itself as a cornerstone of Melbourne’s grassroots music scene, hosting countless local acts and international touring artists across its distinct multi-level spaces. The venue’s signature art deco features created an unmistakable atmosphere that became synonymous with late-night revelry and musical discovery.

While the future of the space remains uncertain, management maintains hope that the right operator will step forward to continue The Gaso’s legacy of supporting live music in Melbourne’s inner north.
