Melbourne Fringe Festival is launched and La Mama’s offering promises to be something extraordinary! Presenting six unique, boundary-pushing, entertaining works from 29 September til 18 October, La Mama’s theatres will be packed with thrills, wit, cheek – and even the odd tear.
At HQ we kick off with Extraterrestrial’s TRASH WIZARD, a camp, absurdist, post-humanist, dark comedy that slowly collapses into a tragedy. And puppets. Meanwhile at La Mama Courthouse Emma J Hawkins & Leisa Prowd’s EXHIBIT is part performance, part installation, part beautifully strange encounter — where humans become the display, and the audience can’t help but be implicated.
Followed by Emma Fawcett’s TOTO’S SONG at HQ, an offbeat darkly comic new play that celebrates how we care for each other, how we fail, and how we keep dancing anyway. And at Courthouse Emerson Brophy’s cheeky one man musical comedy PARASOCIAL gives us that awkward one-sided relationship with the people we spend our lives watching. Finally Ben Grant’s WRONG WAY GROW BACK ends the HQ Fringe lineup with darkly funny storytelling from a man arriving at the middle of his life and wondering if he can find reverse. And we’re proud to present Rollercoaster Theatre’s new devised work RED, part fairytale, part reckoning, that boldly reimagines Little Red Riding Hood, pulling apart the power structures with an ensemble of 16 professional actors with intellectual disabilities.
A program this hot will sell out fast, and with Trades Hall Hub literally just around the corner, La Mama will definitely be the place to be during this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival!
