Meet Cinematica!, La Mama’s new quarterly event celebrating unconventional film.
La Mama theatre is embracing the apocalyptic atmosphere of 2020 by hosting a night dedicated to cinema embracing themes of dystopia, nihilism and end-of-the-world.
Launching this Halloween, the event will be the first of La Mama’s new Cinematica! event series showcasing short-film, obscure music videos, experimental film, moving image and avant-garde cinema.
Each instalment of Cinematica! will explore a different concept or theme, the first of which being ‘Apocalypse Normal’.
Expect to see horror short-films, music film clips and a screening of a surprise cult-classic film, accompanied by special guests Jaimie Leonarder – who you may know as Jay Katz – and his wife Aspasia, aka Miss Death, to present the main feature.
“I am thrilled to introduce Cinematica! into La Mama’s repertoire,” said La Mama’s Acting General Manager, Tessa Spooner. “There is certainly a depressing vibe in Melbourne at the moment and it has been disheartening that we can’t bring people together in the theatre.”
“It has been challenging for many to lose the immediacy and intimacy of live performance. However, there is so much amazing, interesting archival, experimental film and obscure videos out there that we are keen to share with our audiences.
“We’re particularly excited to bring some kooky films out for Halloween, given many have been joking that the apocalypse is here,” she said.
Cinematica! Apocalypse Normal is happening from 8pm on Saturday October 31. For tickets and more information, visit La Mama’s website.
