My show, ‘Like This Like Dad’, is a story of my relationship with my traditional Chinese father. Also, let’s not pretend you haven’t heard silly Asian stereotypes like, “finish your rice or your wife will be ugly.” and how Asian Dads are proud and can’t show affection towards their son. I’m here to tell you that is all true and more. But ultimately, I’d like to believe it is a heartwarming tale that is dear to me and relatable to you!
When I started comedy, Malaysia did not even have an open mic night. The first gig I performed in was in 2006, the next open mic night in Kuala Lumpur was not held until 2008 – which was my second gig. Now here I am at the MICF.
When writing this show, I was initially worried that it would not be understood especially to a foreign audience but I was nominated for Best Comedy Award at Perth Fringe in January, so I feel reassured.
I mostly write based on my experiences I have gone through and it has been fairly fun and easy until this show came about. It deals with a person who is undoubtedly close to my heart. I could write this as funny, heartwarming, or I could just write it as honestly as I could. I hope you come watch my show and find out which one it was.
