KLP on finding balance between being a songwriter, vocalist, producer, radio host and DJ

She’s written solo tracks, which have been a success; last year’s single Recover (ft. Remi) was played on triple j for over six months. Now she’s released her new single Back In The Room, taken from her 2016 EP Ember.

Back In The Room explores the process of writing music, as Peters aims to capture the emotions she feels while writing about her personal experiences.

“It all has to come from something really real that’s happened to me,” Peters says. “It has to be about someone or something that’s happened, I can’t fake it.

“Sometimes you make yourself a little crazy because it’s like putting yourself through therapy everyday when you’re trying to write music. You’re digging up these feelings and you’re trying to hone in on how you feel about something.

“My boyfriend sees me go through this and almost go a little crazy sometimes when I’m writing music, because I get highly emotional. But if you really love someone, you love them unconditionally and you understand that’s the process they’re going through, so that was what I wanted to write it about.

Peters co-wrote Back In The Room with Julian Hamilton from The Presets, since they both share the similar experience of having partners who observe them throughout their artistic processes.

“We decided to flip it and write it from the other person’s point of view,” Peters says. “Like the partner’s point of view in watching someone go through the process of whatever they’re doing, losing their mind a little bit and waiting for them to come back into reality so they can chill together.”

Peters has also collaborated with other artists including Skrillex, What So Not and SACHI. Her song Flight was created in collaboration with SACHI.

“If I’m writing for me, I’m the one that’s driving it,” Peters says. “With Flight, SACHI kind of have to accommodate for what I want because I’m the artist for that one. But if I’m writing for someone else, like What So Not or Slumberjack, I need to write for them so I need to adapt and come up with something they like, and come up with something that suits their music. You’ve got to be flexible but for me it’s fun to try to crack that code.”

Peters’ musical journey develops in relation to her life experiences and influences – whether they’re musical, people she writes with, or the relationships she’s in at the time.

“There’s so many things that help to go into the creation of music,” she says. “There’s the producers but then there’s also the friends, and the boyfriends and girlfriends in your life that create the ideas.

“I feel like I’ll never run out of things to say, because as long as I’m still alive and still living and still having experiences there’s going to be things to talk about.”

Apart from writing songs and collaborating with different artists, Peters also enjoys hosting triple j’s House Party, since she loves all styles of music.

“With House Party, it’s about the vibe. It’s not about breaking new songs and talking in depth about the artist or the songs.

“It’s about creating a high energy and fun place for people to tune in and listen to music, so it really suits me and I like that. I like that escapism and being able to play loads of songs in a row and actually put a smile on people’s faces.”

Peters is also going to perform at Party In The Paddock next month, and she mentions that she had a lot of fun when she performed there a couple of years ago.

“I’m looking forward to doing it again and with more artists because there are just so many amazing people playing this time,” she says.

“I’ve got some really good friends that are going to be down there; Matt Okine the comedian is a mate of mine and I really like being around him because he inspires me to be a better person and to challenge myself.”
