You have been working in the music industry for a decade and a half – how have your goals as an artist over that time changed?
My goal has never changed, although the music industry and the way people listen to music has changed. My goal is as simple as making music and sharing it with as many people as possible.
Your career has embraced different genres and identities – what has prompted the distinctions?
Basically I started making electronic music in general. Now I’m probably more well known in the house music scene, but I started with hip hop. I love drum and bass, and have made some techno tracks too! I was advised by record labels to try and not confuse the fans, so I took on different nicknames to match the different styles of music I was doing!
Your background is in classical music – how much do you think your original training has helped your career?
Not that much I think, actually I know many people who play piano far better than me without any lessons! Reading sheet music and performing like a robot never been so essential for making electronic music .
Looking back, would you have taken the same route?
I didn’t really see the route; I was sleeping at the back! But if taking this route brought me here today, I would say yes, I probably would! But maybe with a shortcut next time.
Is there one moment which for you epitomises your success?
I would say around 2003/2004 when the funky house scene exploded!
Your career has seen many collaborations – what makes a good partnership?
A good attitude – you need to leave your ego outside the room when it’s time for working.
Who have you most enjoyed working with and why?
Recently I worked with Sergio Flores, another house producer and songwriter, I felt like he was an extension of my head. This is a really comfortable way of working, as you don’t need to speak and explain all the time what and why you are doing something. Oh, and Vito (Junior Jack) of course!
You are taking part in the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project – can you tell us a little bit about the project?
The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project idea is very cool; it’s great to be part of it. Looking forward to waving to the Australian DJs Nervo and Bang Gang DeeJays as we fly past them on the way over!
If you were to offer advice to an upstart in your field, what would you say?
Go back to school, get a diploma and try to find a proper job!
As a performer, producer and remixer – your work is varied – do you have a preference?
Music is like a big playground, some days you like to play in the sandbox, the day after you enjoy the slide, and the next day you have fun kicking a ball about. I personally just love being in this playground, I have no real preference for activities I get involved in, it all just depends on the moment.
