‘Bedroom auteur’ Jonny Telefone ends five years’ worth of cassette- and digital-only transmissions with the release of an actual CD – a ‘Best of’, no less, which will delight the pants off of his 12 devoted fans (one of whom is my editor). For the rest of us, Spirit Man is a head-turning debut, a delicate sort of tribal psychedelic pop anthem with a ridiculous but captivating refrain, pan pipes and a wicked rhythmic break down. The grim, theatrical bent and distinctive songcraft is reminiscent of Snowman.
