One of the youngest performers at this year’s festival is 19-year-old Joel Creasey, who, despite only starting his stand-up career age 17, is now performing his second solo show at the MICF.
After leaving University, Joel began performing stand-up, and soon gained prominence in the Perth comedy scene. His debut show, Slumber Party, received rave reviews during the 2010 MICF, and perfectly highlighted Creasey’s likeable demeanour, with Chortle stating, “Joel has a strong streak of likeability. As a debutant, he has certainly imposed his compelling personality on the stand-up world.” After a successful run at MICF, (Slumber Party earned him a nomination in the Best Newcomer category, an accolade which went to Claudia O’Doherty), he is returning with his latest show Poltical Animal.
Political Animal (A Beginner’s Guide To Becoming Prime Minister) (to give it its full title) harkens back to his days (and I do mean days) studying Political Science at University. “My Mum was pretty stoked when I was studying, but then I went, ‘Actually, I want to tell jokes about Lindsay Lohan’”.
The show aims to shatter our perception of modern politics, and outline just how rockstar you have to be make it to The Lodge. He has fast earned a reputation as the “biggest bitch in comedy”, with his acerbic wit, and outspoken opinions on some high profile people (Tony Abbott being a primary target). His style has not been to all tastes, and Political Animal is a move to silence some critics who accused his act of being too celeb/gossip orientated. “This year I decided to tackle a new subject. What is the most boring subject? Politics! But I love politics. I think politics is rockstar, and politicians are the biggest celebrities.”
Joel Creasey performs Political Animal at Melbourne Town Halls’ Cloak Room at 8.30pm on Mondays, and at The Forum Theatre’s Ladies’ Lounge from March 31 – April 24 at 9.30pm Tuesday – Saturday and 8.30pm on Sundays. Tickets are $15 – $22 from Ticketmaster online, 1300 660 013 and at the door.
