Jess Pearman doesn't write jokes you could have thought of yourself, so if you think you know what this hilarious new Melbourne International Comedy Festival show is about, think again.

Champagne Problems may be the side-splitting Pearman’s debut solo show at the Comedy Festival but she’s a familiar face to many in Melbourne’s comedy scene, having delighted audiences at The Comics Lounge, The Gaso, The Bergy Seltzer, The Resistance Bar, The Bendi and many, many more.

In fact, she’s a former rock vocalist that’s been mastering rowdy crowds since 2016, so she’s a seasoned veteran of all things funny, years of experience packed into what will likely be a riotous debut.

This year, she’ll be performing at The Rubber Chicken in South Melbourne – you can’t miss it, the pub has a giant rubber chicken on the front – in a show that tackles the timely subject of first-world problems. It’s a hot-button issue made for comedy, but if you think you know what to expect, think again.

“I like telling jokes about topics where people go to roll their eyes coz they think they know what I’m going to say, and by the time they start I’ve made them chuckle and they’ve been unable to complete said eye-roll,” she contends.

“I’ve also made a rule for myself. If I discuss a cliche topic, I have to have something unique to say about it. I’m not interested in writing jokes you could’ve thought of yourself.”

Ultimately, if you want to know the first thing about Pearman, you’re going to have to grab tickets to her show (and quick, she’s only playing three dates(!) so they’re going to sell-out quicksmart. If you need any more convincing, take it from fellow Melbourne comedy favourite Billy Stiles: “She may look like Reese Witherspoon, but she’s scarier than Ivan Milat.”
