This event is part of the 2024 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
Multi-award-winning vocalist extraordinaire Jazzmeia Horn’s name speaks for itself—with her stunning vocals, inspired scatting and irresistible vivacity, Horn is redefining jazz tradition.
Drawing on her love for iconic singers of the 1950s and ‘60s such as Nina Simone and Sara Vaughan, but with a sound that is completely her own, Horn’s live shows are renowned for leaving audiences spellbound, as she showcases her impressive verbal acrobatics and idiosyncratic charm. As one reviewer aptly put it, “there is nothing like a live performance that leaves you speechless, elated and buoyant; the virtuosity and creativity exuded by Jazzmeia Horn did exactly that” (Isolated Nation).
Performing material from her latest release Messages, this performance marks Horn’s highly anticipated Melbourne debut, after the rising star wowed sold-out crowds at the 2019 Perth Festival. Five years on, her star has well and truly risen—and Horn has cemented her standing as the present, past and future of jazz.
Opening Act: Then Now When
Then Now When is a collaborative trio of award-winning instrumentalists finding new modes of expression through improvisation, composition and interplay. Inspired by their shared love of guitar-led music, Marc Ribot, Shazhad Ismaily, and Brian Blade are among a diverse family of sonic cousins. Blurring the lines between the rigid and fluid, the trio conjure mellifluous soundscapes with the boldness of a Rothko painting.
