Fan-favourite performer Jay Wymarra is fusing his many talents into the comedic smorgasbord that is Amajayus.

When you go see Jay Wymarra perform, expect to be mystified. The First Nations stand-up comic, MC, drag queen and creative was born for the stage and has steadily developed a dedicated fanbase in Australia and abroad.

This year, he’s taken a spooky turn with his Melbourne International Comedy Festival contribution. Part musical, part comedic cabaret special, the story follows the inner life, conflicts, journey and fashion choices of a young queer black boy who isn’t afraid to pave his own way.

The “queer-feral rock-opera” details Jay’s transformation from comedian to political figure, from musical nerd to pansexual lunatic. It’s ultimately about figuring out how to be true to yourself and find where you belong in this wild and wonderful world.

There will be ghosts. There will be giggles. There will be brand new musical tracks, from soulful queer ballads to a house banger called Grow Some Balls (stay tuned for its release).

“I am totally excited to unleash AmaJayus onto suspecting audiences! I pay homage to the murky past, gaze into an unknown future, and lead the crowd into a playfully dark and fabulous space”, says Jay.

With roots tracing back to the Saibai Koedal people of Saibai Island,  the Meriam people of Murray Island and the Gudang/Yadaykenu people of Cape York, Pajinka, and Somerset, Jay is not only a performing powerhouse but also a strong human rights activist.

For anyone looking to catch a darkly hilarious show brought forth by a multi-talented creative force, AmaJayus is an easy choice.

Jay Wymarra’s AmaJayus will show in the Trades Hall Archive Room from April 8 to 21. For more information and to grab tickets, head here
