Conventionally, études (studies) are pieces to flex a performer’s technique, and equally, to mine the depths of an instrument’s capability. This program explores the latter; the traditional étude is left behind for works in which composers act as mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, progressively deconstructing the keyboard’s properties through increasingly extreme manipulations and distortions.
