Izy, Jess Hitchcock headline Brunswick NAIDOC Week celebration

1 / 2

The Brunswick Ballroom are putting on a NAIDOC Week celebration on Thursday July 7, featuring IZY, Jess Hitchcock, Lauren Sheree and Madi Coville-Walker.

The fab four acts will be taking to the resplendent Ballroom for a NAIDOC Week celebration to remember from 6:30pm on Thursday, bringing with them a variety of musical backgrounds.

You can expect to hear everything from the Prince and D’Angelo influenced neo-soul of Izy (chuck in a bit of Alabama Shakes for good measure), to the award-winning mixture of jazz and opera that has made Jess Hitchcock one of Australia’s most versatile and impressive performers. Lauren Sheree brings her contemporary folk fusions to the table, while Madi Colville-Walker adds impressive songwriting nous, having captured everyone’s attention with her debut single ‘Less Than A Man’ in February this year.

Far North Queensland’s Izy need little introduction, they’ve been delighting Melbourne audiences since relocating down here in 2019 and recently strutted their smooth stuff at the Reclink Cup. All instruments, no computers, the trio of Ryo, Warrigo and Maru each come from musical families from different continents, with Warrigo Tyrrell Jr in particular crediting an upbringing on Blak protest music and gospel for his successful musical endeavours.

Hitchcock’s family origins stretch back to Saibai Island in the Torres Straits and Papua New Guinea. She devoted the last decade to working with Australia’s Indigenous opera company Short Black Opera as a performer, composer and instructor alongside Yorta Yorta soprano Deborah Cheetham AO. Colville-Walker is a proud Yorta Yorta woman who has been nominated for the Music Victoria Archie Roach Emerging Artist Award 2021 and has worked alongside many organisations such as Barpridhila, Songlines, Culture Is Life and The Archie Roach Foundation. Sheree is a 23 year old Wakka Wakka woman who has been based on Wurundjeri land since 2016, and uses creativity, songwriting and the ukulele to create contemporary soul/folk music exploring catharsis and healing through song.

The grand ball will feature a night of classic dance music courtesy of the 10-piece big band; Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and the rest from Count Basie to Peggy Lee and back.

Special guests for the night include the Queen of swing Julie O’Hara on vocals and modern day Vaudevillian Hayley Hoopla on hoops.
